Since
MS is a complicated disease, its successful treatment will probably
require a new combination of treatments that control or heal each of the
disease mechanisms: autoimmunity, loss of nervous system cells, and the
failure of the central nervous
system to regenerate the needed cells. Stem cells provide the promise
of completing this therapeutic goal. They have an outstanding
regenerative capacity and the overall flexibility to develop into
hundreds of different types of cells, including neurons and the skin
cells that make the myelin sheath. Stem cells also modulate the immune
system and can produce positive factors that protect neurons.
There
is interesting progress being created through progressive research
related to the potential of many types of stem skin cells both for
slowing MS disease activity disease symptoms and then for restoring damage to the nervous
system. With the vital dependence on more effective treatments for MS,
particularly for those with more progressive forms of the disease, we
believe the potential of all types of cellular therapies must be
discovered. The Society is at the moment supporting 12 research jobs
exploring various types of stem cells, including skin cells derived from
fat and skin, bone marrow, and has supported more than sixty above
control cell studies over the past decade.
One
other potential application of stem cells is to form tissues and cells
for medical therapies. Currently, it is donated organs and tissues that
are tried for damaged or unable to start ones. Sadly, the amount of men
and women awaiting a transplant is
a lot higher than the number of available body organs. Transplant
waiting lists are enormous and many people die awaiting transplants.
